Newday
Newday is a New Frontiers Christian event held every year, but in 2009 it is coming to the Norfolk
Showground, Norwich. Unite and Kings are taking around 50 people from the Gt Yarmouth area. Last year, approximately 6000 young people attended, primarily between the ages of 12 and 19. The event lasts 6 days and in that time, the attendees spend their time in seminars, concerts, in social
action teams, playing basketball or football, hanging out in the cafes, going to gigs, etc. When I say that Newday is a Christian event, this doesn’t limit it to Christians only – there are many young people who attend who aren’t Christian, and they have just as much fun as those who are.
A typical day at Newday would be something like this:
Everyone gets up in the morning and hangs out with their friends, has some breakfast, then goes off to meetings.
The first are the morning meetings which are times of worship and celebration and teaching from the Bible. They are always amazing! Speakers visit from all over the world. There is then the opportunity to go to seminars - these cover a whole host of topics, some to do with growing up, some to do with God, and all to do with life in one way or another.
After lunch everyone’s free just to hang out. There’s sport and all kinds of activities taking place on the campsite or people can just build relationships with friends, it’s totally up to them. In the afternoon hundreds of young people get on coaches and go off into the city to do social action projects.
Everyone comes back to have tea and then in the evenings we have meetings similar to the morning – a real time of celebration. We worship God, we hear from the Bible, we pray. After the meeting there are gigs happening, people hanging out with friends and eating food, all kinds of stuff taking place before
eventually people go to bed.
